Most households own tools they use only a few times a year. Each was manufactured, packaged and shipped, and most will eventually end up in landfill. Tool libraries give people shared access to the equipment they need, without each household having to buy and store their own.
MidWaste is supporting tool libraries across the region to help local communities reduce waste, save money and make the most of what they have.
A tool library is a community service that loans tools to members, in the same way a traditional library loans books. Members borrow what they need for a project, return it when they're finished, and the same item is used by many different households over its lifetime.
Tool libraries have many benefits:
Support a circular economy: Tool libraries are a practical example of the circular economy in action. Instead of buying new tools that may only be used once or twice, residents can share resources, reducing demand for raw materials, manufacturing and energy, while minimising waste to landfill.
Make DIY and repair more accessible: Tool libraries remove the expensive of purchasing tools, empowering residents to tackle repairs, home improvements and gardening tasks they might otherwise delay or avoid. Access to tools can support safer homes and wellmaintained properties, particularly for renters, pensioners, students and young families.Build skills, confidence and community: MidWaste Tool Libraries were established in partnership with the Hastings Neighbourhood Services, Community Housing Ltd and your local Council. Midwaste is also hosting workshops where you can learn repair skills with tools from the tool library.
