Libraries
of Things

MidWaste is supporting Libraries of Things across the region to help local communities reduce waste, save money and make the most of what they have.

A Library of Things is a community service that loans useful 'things' to members, in the same way a traditional library loans books. Examples include garden implements, tools, event supplies, kitchen items, and camping gear. Some specialise in tools and are known as Tool Libraries. Members borrow what they need, return it when they're finished, and the same item is used by many different households over its lifetime.

Why Use a Library of Things?

Libraries of Things have many benefits, including:

Support a circular economy:

Libraries of Things are a practical example of the circular economy in action. Instead of buying new items that may only be used once or twice, residents can share resources, reducing consumption, and ultimately minimising waste to landfill.

Make DIY and repair more accessible:

Libraries of Things and Tool libraries remove the cost of buying tools, letting residents tackle repairs, home improvements and gardening they might otherwise put off. This supports safer, well-maintained homes, especially for renters, pensioners and students.

Build skills, confidence and community:

Libraries of Things provide valuable volunteering opportunities for the community and provide the equipment and tools needed for people to develop skills or try a new hobby. Regular workshops and events are also held at our regional Libraries of Things, allowing people to learn new skills in repair and reuse.
