The NSW social housing sector is expanding rapidly to address the State’s housing shortage and effective waste management is required to provide social housing communities with a safe and healthy environment.
The guidance presented in the Collaborative Waste Management Guide for Social Housing is based on a suite of projects delivered under the Clean Country Program. The Clean Country Program was led by an interagency group formed in a regional town to respond to ongoing household waste management issues in a social housing estate. The group comprised representatives from Council, Council’s waste contractor, a social housing provider, MidWaste Regional Waste Group, local community members and State government agencies. The program was delivered between about 2016 and 2021, and the aim of the program was to address waste challenges through collaborative efforts.
The Clean Country Program demonstrated that by working together with key stakeholders including tenants, social housing providers, councils, and waste service providers, sustainable localised solutions can be identified and actioned to resolve waste management challenges in regional communities.
